WELCOME TO THE SAVVY CONSUMER'S GUIDE TO HEALTHCARE

"Discovery consists in seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought."
Albert Szent-Gyorgi, Ph.D.
WHY YOU SHOULD READ THIS BOOK
"The Savvy Consumer's Guide to Healthcare" is highly recommended reading for three audiences: those that provide healthcare services; those that pay for healthcare services; and those that receive healthcare services.

The reason most consumers choose to explore alternative approaches to healing is a very simple one: what they're doing isn't working. The intent of the book is to provide what I refer to as "The Savvy Consumer's Guide to Healthcare," and is the culmination of a journey that began several years ago, when I experienced health problems. The restoration of my health and what I learned in the process underlies much of the material in this book. It also serves as the basis for my doctoral work in evidence-based medicine at the University of Kentucky.

TO THE PROVIDER

When medical practice has evidence-based medicine at its core and transparency in its absence, we will begin to see improved health outcomes and reductions in healthcare expenditures nationwide. "The Savvy Consumer's Guide to Healthcare," introduces the concept of evidence-based medicine to the American consumer, something I believe will be beneficial for all.

TO THE CONSUMER

The book introduces the concept of evidence-based medicine to the American consumer, with a first-of-its-kind look at the science underlying both alternative and conventional medicine. If it helps you understand the realities of healthcare and the limits of what is currently known, it will have accomplished part of its task. If it provides you with hope, eager to learn more, it will have accomplished part of its task. If you come away from the book understanding the limits of science, as well as its merits, you will emerge a savvy consumer, which is the ultimate purpose of the book.

TO THE PAYOR

Depending on the data-set used, 20-50% of medicine is science-based. With that statistic in mind, working to ensure the application of evidence-based medicine in all specialties, and transparency in its absence, can begin to reduce the $2.2 trillion spent annually on healthcare in the U.S., while enhancing the health outcomes
of consumers nationwide.
